Huge crowds gathered in Tabriz on Tuesday for the funeral procession of President Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash at the weekend.

Footage shows thousands of people filling the streets close to the caskets of Raisi and his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Following the procession, the bodies will be transported to Tehran. On Wednesday, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is expected to lead prayers in the capital, along with foreign dignitaries.

The Iranian president, Amir-Abdollahian and others were confirmed dead by state media and officials after their helicopter came down in the mountains of northern Iran during heavy fog on Sunday.

The Supreme Leader declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.

Condolences came from the leaders of Russia, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and others.

Raisi, a conservative cleric seen as close to the Supreme Leader, was elected in 2021.
