Description

Berlin's long-delayed Willy Brandt Airport (Berlin Brandenburg; BER) will finally open in October 2020, the constructors announced during a press conference in Berlin on Friday.

"Together with the supervisory board we have come to a conclusion that it [the BER opening] is resistant and achievable," Supervisory Board Chairman Rainer Bretschneider said, adding "we are aware of all mistakes, which are still in our papers, of all defects, which are still there, of everything that still should be delivered by the airport operating company and associated firms."

Bretschneider then used Merkel's phrase 'wir schaffen das' (we can do it in English) that was popularised during the 2015 European migrant crisis.

BER Airport Chief Engelbert Luetke Daldrup said the move to the new airport will be phased. All the airlines are scheduled to be moved from Tegel, the busiest of the existing two airports, till November 8, 2020. "From that moment the BER will be fully in operation and Tegel Airport will no longer operate commercial flights," he explained.

Berlin-Brandenburg, which is adjacent to Berlin Schonefeld airport, was scheduled to start functioning in 2011. Construction problems and spiralling costs have delayed its opening.
