Description

Final preparations for Berlin's New Year's Eve 2020 program were underway on Thursday, with police and security manning roadblocks around Brandenburg Gate. The celebrations will be held without an audience this year, due to coronavirus restrictions.

The annual open-air celebrations at the iconic landmark usually feature live bands, DJs and a huge firework display at midnight. This year, the celebrations will be broadcast on television and online in order to prohibit the spread of the coronavirus.

Normally the event is free of charge and has attracted hundreds of thousands of people year after year. This year's show will still go ahead with a host of German celebrities due to perform.

Germany has reported 1.7 million cases of the coronavirus that broke out around a year ago, of which over 116,000 have been in the last seven days, according to data compiled by the Robert Koch Institute. Germany has seen a total of just over 33,000 deaths with the virus, many of which have been in the second wave.
