The Berlin police were deployed to pursue and disperse residents found violating COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings and use of fireworks during the New Year's Eve celebrations, in the early hours of Friday.
Despite COVID-19 restrictions on social gatherings and a partial ban on fireworks, several Berliners were seen lighting up the skies of the popular Berlin districts of Kreuzberg and Neukolln with a large numbers of fireworks, while some residents sparked flares from their balconies.
Police units were seen deployed in the districts chasing off residents seen violating said restrictions, dispersing them and conducting searches in heavily crowded spaces.
Ahead of New Year's Eve the German authorities imposed a ban on fireworks sales and increased checks on the border with Poland to prevent people from smuggling firecrackers into the country.
