Thousands of Iraqis gathered at Tahrir Square in Baghdad's city centre on Sunday to mark the one year anniversary of the assassinations of Iranian Quds Force general Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.
During the demonstration, protesters chanted anti-American slogans, held Iraqi flags as well as portraits of the two deceased men which they also displayed near the Freedom Monument.
On January 3 2020, al-Muhandis and Soleimani were both killed by a drone strike approved by US president Donald Trump, leading to a major diplomatic row between Tehran and Washington.
The rally comes amid tense relations between the two countries ahead of the last days of President Trump at the White House and the inauguration of newly-elected US President Joe Biden.
