Description

Buildings in Beirut's southern suburbs were seen destroyed on Thursday, after reports that the area saw 17 separate airstrikes overnight.

Footage shows extensive damage in Mouawad Market Street in the Haret Hreik area, where one building completely collapsed, while others were partially damaged, including cars and shops. Smoke can be seen rising from the bombed-out buildings.

The Israeli army previously ordered the evacuation of several neighbourhoods in Beirut's southern suburbs, including Haret Hreik, Burj al-Barajneh, and Al-Jamous.

According to Lebanon's official news agency, the 17 strikes continued until 4 am local time (01:00 GMT).

Israel's latest wave of strikes on Hezbollah targets began on September 23, with more than 1,200 people killed and over 7,000 injured at time of publication, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. A 'limited' ground incursion also began on Tuesday.

Last Friday, an attack on Beirut's southern suburb killed Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and others. Iran launched a wave of missiles on Tuesday, which is said was in response to that assassination and others.

Tensions in southern Lebanon escalated in mid of September after mass explosions of pagers and handheld radios belonging to Hezbollah. The group has exchanged cross-border fire with Israel since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023.
