Italian football fans packed the streets of Rome late on Sunday night until the early hours of Monday morning to celebrate their nation's triumph in Euro 2020.

Italy won the final against England in Wembley on penalties, after drawing over 120 minutes in which the Italian side outplayed and outsmarted their English opponents.

Thousands of fans wearing the Azzurri blue colours, waving Italian flags, and lighting flares cheered through the night at Rome's Piazza Venezia.

"The emotions are undescribable, I'm not able to find the right words. It's something really emotional, I still have hairs standing up on my arms, you can see them. It's really hard to find the words, honestly," remarked an Italian fan.

Despite the great performance on the pitch, the match went down to penalties, where player of the tournament Gianluigi (Gigio) Donnarumma shone. The former A.C. Milan goalkeeper earned the praise of his celebrating countrymen.

"I lived it with a lot of tension, but I had a feeling we could do it. Most of all, because we have a really strong goalkeeper," said one Italian fan.

"My heart was pounding, a lot. But, whatever, Gigio Donnarumma is a superstar, we have a superstar in goal and we are European champions now," stated another Italian fan.

Many Italians celebrated the liberation and joy that the win provided the country after Italy suffered a difficult year, being Europe's COVID epicentre.

"Great night for the whole of Italy after this difficult period of time, related to COVID. It's a deserved victory for all these people who are here celebrating with us," remarked an ecstatic Italian football fan.
