Drone footage filmed on Thursday shows the phenomenal view as the flooding formed a lake surrounded by sand dunes and palm trees. Footage also shows tourists gathering by the lake and traveling around the desert in camel caravans.
"This is fantastic, this is a blessed event. As you can see, tourists from all regions come to enjoy the scenery," one local commented.
Merzouga already has a reputation as being a top tourist destination in Morocco, however, the natural phenomena caused by rare rainfall has attracted more tourists to the area.
The Errachidia region, located in the southern and southeastern areas of Morocco, is one of the driest deserts in the world. Due to its arid climate, this region has not experienced the formation of lakes and ponds.
Errachidia is known for experiencing extreme temperatures, with scorching summers and frigid winters. Despite the harsh temperature fluctuations, the region receives minimal rainfall.
According to the Ministry of Interior, the desert regions of southeastern Morocco received half their average amount of annual rainfall in just two days this September.
Meanwhile, 18 people were killed, and dozens of homes were devastated by floods brought on by heavy rains that struck the districts of Tata, Tiznit, Errachidia, Tinghir, and Taroudant.
