Russian President Vladimir Putin urged members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to launch a common policy in Afghanistan following the 'hasty' US troops' withdrawal from the country, speaking through video conference at a meeting of SCO Heads of State held in Dushanbe on Friday.

"Right now, our organisation is facing an urgent task of launching a common coordinated policy, which would take into account the serious risks related to the surge of tension in Afghanistan after the hasty pull-out, if not to say flight, of the US forces and their NATO allies from that country," said Putin.

The Russian leader also criticised the US for having left an 'open Pandora's Box full of problems' in the country, referring to the numerous modern Western weapons left behind during the withdrawal.

Putin also said that the interim government formed in Afghanistan cannot yet be called representative nor inclusive, adding that working with would still be necessary.

Chinese President Xi Jinping drew attention to the importance of mutual support in the SCO.

"It is necessary to support each other in ensuring stability during elections and other important domestic political events, to avoid interference from outside under any pretext, and to keep the future and destiny of the country firmly in our own hands," said the Chinese President.

The SCO meeting was timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the organisation. The presidents of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and the Pakistani prime minister attended the summit in person. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Russian President Vladimir Putin joined through video conference.

In addition, the leaders of the SCO observer countries, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, President of Iran Ibrahim Raisi, and President of Mongolia Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh, attended the event.

Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov also participated as a guest.
