03:10The Israeli authorities machinery tore down the home of a Palestinian family in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in East Jerusalem, early on Wednesday morning.
Members of the Israeli police could be seen at the scene while the demolition of the property was carried out.
"The occupation government considered that the Palestinian young man’s behaviour by sacrificing himself, his mother and his children to avoid expulsion as a challenge against them. We were astonished that around 03:00 in front of the foreigners and the people of Jerusalem who were here to express their solidarity with the family, they broke into the house and demolished it on their belongings, clothes and furniture. As you can see, the situation is arduous. If you take a look behind me, you can see the ruined library and the scattered clothes, it's a great tragedy for this neighbourhood," a local said.
The Israeli police said in a statement: "We have finalised the execution of the order for the eviction of the illegal buildings built on land allocated for building educational units for disabled children from East Jerusalem," then elaborated that " family members living on the property were given many opportunities to hand over land with consent."
These families, who have been forcefully evicted from their original areas and displaced to this neighbourhood in tandem with the declaration of the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, are involved in a legal dispute with Israeli organisations which claim that these houses were built on land owned by Jews before 1948.
