German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Barack Obama presided over the official opening ceremony of the Hannover Messe 2016 annual industrial trade show at the Hannover Exhibition Grounds on Monday.

Speaking from the US Investment Pavilion, both leaders stressed the necessity for further cooperation between the two countries in various different spheres including trade, innovation and manufacturing technologies. Merkel called the US partners "strong friends" and stated that "we can learn from each other, maintain close cooperation in the innovation sphere. And I believe it is going to be an interesting and successful fair."

Barack Obama spoke on "America's commitment to innovation," before humorously adding: "So this is another chance for me to tell everyone to come here and buy 'made in America.'
