Description

Germany's Federal Chancellor, Angela Merkel, was seen arriving at Brussel's Europa building for the first part of the European Union's two-day summit on Thursday.

As part of the summit, the European Council will be discussing the COVID-19 situation, the future of the EU-UK partnership regarding Brexit, the EU's commitment to climate change objectives and EU-Africa relations.

In the statement made at the opening of the summit, Merkel said the EU wanted a Brexit deal but not at any price.

"We do not want a deal at any price, so it has to be a fair deal that serves the interests of both sides, but this is worth every effort and we will of course support the Commission's negotiation of [EU's Brexit head negotiator Michel Barnier] Mr Barnier and Ursula Von der Leyen," Merkel stated, with a common goal to redefine a common position on Britain's withdrawal from the European Union.

The Chancellor commented on tonight's subject about climate change, where "the EU must reach an agreement to improve the overall target for 2030," by reducing the EU's emissions even further.
