Description

Volunteers distributed food packages for earthquake victims in Latakia shelters on Saturday.

Footage shows volunteers cooking meals in a large field kitchen set up by Al-Areen Charitable Foundation and distributing the food at Al-Sham Private University, which has opened its doors to victims of the earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria earlier in the month.

Speaking during an interview, volunteer Haidar Mashieh stated "We offer three meals a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. We cover the needs of all the shelter centres in the governorate. We currently provide meals to a large part of the rural area. The number of meals is on the rise daily; we started with providing 1,000 then 2,000 and 3,000 meals. Now we provide 5,000-6,000 meals on a daily basis to serve all the shelter centers in the governorate."

At least 8.8 million people have been affected by the earthquakes according to the UN, which has called on the international community in a flash appeal to ensure assistance to 4.9 million people with the most urgent humanitarian needs in a period of three months until May requiring a sum of $397.6 million (€371 million).

At least 46,000 people are reported to have died in the devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria earlier in the month, with more than 105,000 injured as thousands of buildings collapsed during the natural disaster.
