The former chancellor secured around 37 percent of the vote in Sunday's ballot, based on result projections, giving him a clear victory over the other parties.
"To be honest, I cannot understand why he [Sebastian Kurz] gained again, it is a mystery, [he's] a phenomenon as a political leader," said one resident.
The Freedom Party (FPO) meanwhile won around 16 percent of the vote - a fall of almost 10 percentage points compared to the previous election.
"I am very happy, after all the recent scandals and what is going on in the background, especially in the FPO [Freedom Party]. I am very happy that they got a crack on the head," said one woman.
Some expressed their hopes that Kurz, who will now enter into coalition negotiations, would avoid re-entering into an alliance with the FPO, and instead form a government with the Greens and Neos.
Kurz's previous coalition government with the FPO collapsed in May, following the 'Ibiza video' scandal. The video showed then-FPO party leader Heinz-Christian Strache allegedly discussing governmental contracts with a relative of a supposed Russian investor on the Spanish island.
