Description

Beijing’s residents welcomed in the Lunar New Year with muted celebrations on Tuesday, after authorities cancelled events due to rising cases of COVID-19 in the city.

Hundreds were seen queuing outside a pop-up testing centre in the capital's Dongcheng district on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities are currently racing to contain local outbreaks ahead of the Winter Olympics which is set to begin on Friday.

Two new neighbourhoods in the capital were put under lockdown after several new coronavirus cases were detected on the weekend.

Cultural venues like the Temple of Confucius and the Temple of Earth which are usually alive with New Year revellers on the first of February had reduced entry capacity.

Families were encouraged to spend the day at home. Those who did make it out had to scan health codes and pre-book appointments to visit certain venues.
