Description

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi presented a comprehensive perspective on resolving Sudan's current crisis during the opening session of the Summit of Sudan's Neighbouring Countries held on Thursday in Cairo.

El-Sisi outlined a four-point plan aimed at facilitating immediate relief efforts, fostering dialogue among Sudanese parties, and working towards a sustainable solution.

The Egyptian delegation urged the warring factions in Sudan to halt the escalation and engage in serious negotiations to establish an immediate and lasting cease-fire.

Furthermore, Egypt emphasized the importance of providing unimpeded access to humanitarian aid.

"Establish safe corridors to deliver that aid to the most affected areas inside Sudan, and put in place mechanisms to ensure the provision of the necessary protection for humanitarian aid convoys and international relief personnel," said El-Sisi.

Recognizing the significance of inclusive dialogue, Egypt proposed initiating a comprehensive political process that would involve the participation of political and civil forces, as well as representatives of women and youth. The goal of this process would be to address the aspirations of the Sudanese people for security, prosperity, stability, and democracy.

In addition, Egypt suggested the creation of a communication mechanism derived from the summit. This mechanism would be responsible for developing an executive action plan to comprehensively resolve the crisis in Sudan.

The Summit of Sudan's Neighbouring Countries, hosted by Egypt, represents a united front among regional players to support Sudan during this critical time.

According to a report released by Sudan's Federal Ministry of Health, the recent conflict in Sudan, from April 15 to 27, 2023, resulted in the loss of at least 528 lives and left 4,599 people injured.

A power struggle between the army, led by the country’s de facto ruler General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of deputy leader General 'Hemedti’ Mohamed Hamdan Dagolo, has been ongoing in recent years, although flared up on Saturday, 15 April.

A military council has run the country since a coup in 2021. Although tensions have risen between the two leaders over the country’s direction, the integration of the RSF into the army, and the planned transition to civilian rule.
