Description

The Syrian Arab Red Crescent received a shipment of humanitarian aid provided by the European Union in Damascus on Saturday.

The organisation's president alongside Italian charge d'affaires Massimiliano Dantono oversaw the shipment. "Today we are receiving some Italian shipments. Thirty tons of materials to meet the needs of the Syrian population, in any part of the country," explained Dantono.

Habbouti stated that the goods will be delivered to all affected areas in Syria, including those where the organisation has not yet been allowed to enter such as in opposition-controlled Idlib.

"This is an operation that was made possible because the Syrian government asked the European Union to activate the civil protection mechanism. This made it possible for other countries, not only Italy but also Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Romania, to truck these goods here together with the Italians," commented Dantono. "As a whole, the European Union and the member states are coming together to try to bring some aid to the Syrian population that has been affected by this tragedy," he added.

An Italian military plane arrived at Beirut International Airport on February 11 carrying medical aid for Syrian victims of the deadly earthquakes that hit Turkey earlier in the month.
