Half of Europe's population will be infected with Omicron in the next 6-8 weeks, announced WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr Hans Kluge during a virtual briefing in Copenhagen on Tuesday.

"In the first week of 2022, more than seven million infections were confirmed across the region, more than doubling in a two-week period," said Kluge.

According to the WHO representative around 50 countries have reported cases of Omicron in recent weeks.

Kluge added that the Omicron variant is 'quickly becoming the dominant virus in Western Europe' and warned that the variant is spreading into the Balkans.

"At this rate the institute for health metrics and evaluation forecast that more than 50 percent of the population in the region will be infected with Omicron in the next 6 to 8 weeks," Kluge continued.

The representative went on to warn that even those vaccinated against COVID-19 would be at risk of contracting the Omicron variant.
