China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Wang Wenbin urged the US to 'abandon the zero-sum mentality' after President Biden and UK Prime Minister Sunak reportedly agreed to work together against Beijing, during a briefing in the capital on Wednesday,

"We urge the US to abandon the zero-sum mentality and embrace the trend of our times. Instead of propagating the obsolete 'China threat' theory and piecing together small blocs that are bound to fail, the US might as well try to adopt a new vision featuring openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation," he said.

"China is a development partner and opportunity for other countries, not a threat or challenge," the spokesperson continued.

Biden and Sunak held a telephone call on Tuesday following the new PM's appointment, with the UK government reporting the two had pledged to "counter China’s malign influence".

Tensions between China and the United States also heightened earlier this summer, following visits by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a number of other delegations to Taiwan. Beijing considers the island part of its territory under the 'One China' principle, and has accused Washington of interfering in its internal affairs.
