03:09UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) forces announced it has made significant progress in regaining control of Tripoli and recaptured parts of Ain Zara area south of the capital previously controlled by Libyan National Army (LNA) leader Khalifa Haftar on Thursday.
Footage shows damaged buildings and roads across several locations in south of Tripoli.
According to the GNA officer, GNA forces continued pushing forward on several areas around Tripoli, including Wadi Rabie neighbourhood.
"We are moving forward towards Wadi Rabie. Now the river intersection is behind us and after we establish ourselves in Wadi Rabie," he said, adding the GNA forces "are going to move towards Tarhunah," a town 65 kilometres (40 miles) from the southeast of Tripoli.
The GNA has taken control of several towns in recent weeks and most significantly, captured the strategic al-Watiya airbase near the Tunisian border.
Following the ousting of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the country has been split into areas controlled by the GNA in Tripoli and the northwest, and territories held by eastern-based LNA in Benghazi lead by Haftar.
Recently, the UN has appealed to both sides to stop fighting and allow humanitarian workers to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
