US President Donald Trump said his predecessor Barack Obama treated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan unfairly with the Patriot air-and-missile defence system. Trump gave the comments at a bilateral meeting with Erdogan on the sidelines of the G20 summit on Osaka on Saturday.

“They wouldn't let him buy the missiles that he wanted to buy, which was the Patriot,” Trump said.

Erdogan on his part praised the “strategic partnership” between Turkey and the US.

“There are many steps we need to take within the defence industry area. But more importantly we have a strategic partnership, and this strategic partnership also encourages us to create a solidarity across many areas,” he said.

Leaders of 19 of the most influential countries in the world and the European Union are meeting in Osaka on Friday and Saturday for the 14th Group of 20 summit to discuss climate change, free trade, and economic inequalities among other issues.
