Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah appeared in a televised address from Beirut on Tuesday, the third anniversary of the death of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

During his speech, the Hezbollah chief claimed the assassination of Soleimani was a message to leaders across the region, intended to weaken their resistance to what he viewed as Israeli influence.

“Weakening the parties of the Axis of Resistance in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Yemen. When an official general 'Hajj Qassem Soleimani' in an internationally recognised official regime is killed ... then this is a message to all leaders in the region," he said.

"The assassination of the most strategic danger that Israel deemed as an existential threat, namely Qassem Soleimani," the Hezbollah chief added.

Nasrallah’s speech had originally been scheduled for Friday, December 30, but was cancelled due to health issues, which led to speculation from journalists. The Hezbollah chief was quick to dispel any rumours.

"There is no need to worry at all, I have had this condition for 30 years; it is called allergic Bronchitis,” he said. “When Sayyed Abbas was martyred more than 30 years ago, I was also sick and suffering from the same disease. Everyone knows this very well,” he said.

Soleimani was killed in a US airstrike at Baghdad's international airport on January 3, 2020.

The Pentagon released a statement confirming the US had carried out the attack on the orders of then US President Donald Trump, calling it a ‘decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad’.
