Description

Pope Francis was seen arriving at the Mavrovouni centre migrant camp in Mytilene, Lesbos, on Sunday, as part of his five-day trip to Cyprus and Greece.

President Katerina Sakellaropoulou appeared ahead of the pope, before the Catholic leader was seen pulling up in a car surrounded by escorts.

The pair were greeted with a singing choir upon their arrival.

Nearly 2,200 asylum seekers currently reside at the camp, which was founded after the former migrant camp of Moria burned down the year prior.

Pope Francis is the second Catholic leader to visit Greece in the last twenty years. His trip to the region is an attempt to foster further collaboration between the Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches.
