Description

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Wang Wenbin said that China “highly appreciated” comments made by Russian President Vladimir Putin, regarding US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan during a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday.

"The latest statement of President Putin which you mentioned is a manifestation of the high-level strategic cooperation between China and Russia, as well as the consistent and firm support between the two countries on issues involving each other's core interests,” Wenbin said.

Wenbin was referring to accusations Putin made during the opening address at the Moscow International Security Conference on Tuesday, August 16.

The Russian President claimed Pelosi's visit was "not just a trip of an individual irresponsible politician, but part of a deliberate, conscious US strategy to destabilize and deteriorate the situation in the region and the world."

Wenbin then went on to address comments made by Kurt Campbell, President Biden's Indo-Pacific coordinator, who said Beijing "overreacted" in its response to Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

"The relevant statements made by senior US officials completely confuse black and white, confuse right and wrong, and fully expose the US side's strong reasoning, robber logic, and power," Wenbin said.

"If the Chinese side does not resolutely resist the manic, irresponsible and extremely irrational actions of the United States, the principle of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity in international relations will become a piece of paper. All kinds of separatists and extremist forces will intensify, and the hard-won peace and stability in the region will be seriously damaged," he added.

Tensions are at an all-time high between Beijing and Washington after both US Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a delegation of US lawmakers visited Taiwan on August 2. China regards Taiwan as its territory under the 'One China' principle.
