Description

A humanitarian aid plane sent by European Union landed at Damascus airport. It's the third bunch of humanitarian aid donated by European countries to arrive in Syria, and first aid plane to land in Damascus.

"This is a positive step for us; we thank all European states and nations for sending the relief aid; hopefully, humanitarian aid will grow more extensive in the coming days," said Khalid Hbobati, Syrian Red Crescent director.

According to Hbobati, the EU aid to Syria is being sent both through Beirut and Damasucs, adding that more EU aid planes to land soon at Damasucs airport.

For his part, the Head of EU humanitarian aid operations in Syria, Luigi Pandolfi, urged both Government and opposition groups to provide unrestricted and safe access to Eu's humanitarian partners.

On 23 February, the EU announced a temporary easing of sanctions imposed on Syria to speed up aid deliveries to the country.

According to the European Commission, around 420 tonnes of assistance are being delivered to Syria, including tents, beds, blankets, heaters, hygiene parcels, generators, food, medical supplies, and more.

The aid is planned to be delivered to both government-controlled and non-government-controlled areas.
