Hezbollah on Saturday confirmed the death of its 64-years-old Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, following an Israeli airstrike on Friday on Hezbollah's central headquarters in Beirut's southern suburbs.

"While we feel the pain and bitterness of separation, and the gravity of losing an Arab and Islamic resistant figure who paved the way for the nation's victory, at the same time, we are proud of his blessed legacy of tens of thousands of fighters, cadres, and leaders who were raised on his path, the path of martyrdom and Palestine," Hezbollah stated.

Nasrallah was born in the eastern Beirut in August 1960, he was the eldest of nine children. He studied in his hometown of Bazouriyeh, east of the city of Tyre, where his family returned after the start of the Lebanese Civil War in 1975.

At the age of sixteen, Nasrallah moved to Iraq and studied religious sciences for two years. He then returned to Lebanon, where he joined Amal Movement, founded by Imam Musa al-Sadr. Following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, Nasrallah, along with a group of officials from Amal Movement, broke away and established Hezbollah with support from Iran in 1985.

After Israel assassinated the party's second Secretary-General, Abbas al-Musawi, in 1992, Nasrallah took over as Secretary-General of Hezbollah, a position he held until his death in September 2024. During his leadership, Hezbollah engaged in multiple confrontations with Israel, including the wars of 1993 and 1996, the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000, and the July 2006 war. Hezbollah also became involved in the Syrian war after 2012.

During Nasrallah's leadership of Hezbollah, the party entered Lebanese political life, securing parliamentary seats in every election from 1992 to 2022. Hezbollah also participated in all Lebanese governments since 2005.

On Monday, September 23, the IDF launched a military operation with airstrikes on Hezbollah positions dubbed 'Operation Northern Arrows'. The attacks have claimed the lives over 700 people, injuring 2,000 since Monday, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health at the time of publication. The shelling targeted several areas in the south: the Bekaa Valley, Mount Lebanon, and Beirut.

Tensions in southern Lebanon have escalated in mid-September following the mass explosions of pagers used by Hezbollah and the Israeli shelling of Beirut's southern suburb, which killed the group's senior commander, Ibrahim Aqeel, along with 60 others. Hezbollah, in response, launched a rocket attack on areas near the northern Israeli city of Haifa.

Hezbollah, Lebanese, and Palestinian factions have been exchanging cross-border shelling with the Israeli forces since October 8, one day after the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
