A veterinarian in the Gaza Strip has transformed a makeshift tent into a veterinary clinic, providing essential care to wounded and sick animals overwhelmed by the ongoing war in the region, which has made it exceedingly difficult for pet owners to access adequate treatment for their animals.

Footage shows the arrival of pets with their owners at the tent clinic in Deir al-Balah on Monday, seeking much-needed medical attention.

Saied Abdullah al-Err, the visionary behind this initiative and head of Sulala Animal Rescue in the Gaza Strip, explained that the tent clinic was born out of a pressing need 'to save animals and assist stray animals'.

"We need a place to offer treatment as the main headquarters and Gaza clinics have vanished and most of them have turned into ruins, also the doctors are not there anymore," he said. "These animals have suffered the most, of course all people here are facing hardships amid war and consequences, but the animals has suffered the hardest brunt as people and displaced rely on them."

Discussing the challenges of accessing medical supplies, saying that they managed to purchase drugs that had been stored, as well as quantities from various sources.

Sawsan, like many others, has struggled for a while before finding a place to bring her cat to amid a lack of pet food.

"Cats have nothing to eat, even people are short of food so we can not offer the cats anything to eat. The Lanchon cans and other food aid were interrupted and inaccessible in the meantime so I had to feed them processed meat from the aid supplies, however, it made them suffer from diarrhea," she explained.

While precise figures on the animal population in the Gaza Strip are unavailable, the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) reported that veterinary vaccines were administered to 138,000 animals in 2021.

Hamas-Israel war broke out after Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200 and held in the Gaza Strip.

In the enclave, the Israeli army conducted a large-scale campaign of air strikes and ground incursions, killing at least 41,252 Palestinians and injuring more than 95,497 at the time of publication.
