Description

Chisinau residents gathered for another anti-government rally in the city centre on Monday.

Footage shows protesters standing with placards and chanting outside the National Opera and Ballet Theatre.

One demonstrator said she was angry after the authorities moved to clear away the activists’ tent city on Sunday evening.

"How was it possible to pull out [out of the tents] old people who had already gone to bed? People lost their documents, they [police] put it all in the rubbish. It's just... I can't tell you. I am very outraged by our government, especially the police," said the woman.

Another local resident claimed that those in power had failed to act on the rising cost of living.

"No authority - anarchy! Mostly people - pensioners, large families - suffer," said the protester.

There was no official information about any detentions on the day of the rally.

Protests in the centre of Chisinau have been ongoing since 18 September, when the tent camp was first set up.

On 26 September, Maia Sandu called on law-enforcement agencies to "promptly identify the sources of illegal financing of those who pay for participation in protests and severely punish any attempts at aggression, provocation or destabilisation".

Last week, she also called for enhanced police powers to disperse the protests. According to media reports, rallies which close roads or restrict access to public buildings are now banned on weekdays, while weekend protests are limited to four hours.

Mass anti-government rallies began in the country in May over soaring energy and food prices, as well as falling living standards and record inflation.
