The Israel Defence Force (IDF) released footage on Thursday showing the attack through which it claims to have assassinated Mohammed al-Deif, the commander of the military arm of Hamas in Gaza’s Al-Mawasi refugee camp.
Around 90 Palestinians were killed in the airstrike on a compound in a designated humanitarian zone in Khan Younis on July, 13. Hamas had earlier denied reports that al-Deif had been killed in the strike.
Drone footage shows two successive explosions resulting in huge fireballs in an area of tents housing displaced people.
The IDF says the footage proves that Mohammed al-Deif and his deputy Rafea Salamah were ‘neutralized’ by the attack. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, the Israeli missile attack killed 90 Palestinians and injured more than 300 others.
On Wednesday morning, Hamas announced the death of its political leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was 'assassinated along with his companion in an Israeli raid on their residence in Tehran,' according to a statement from the group. Haniyeh had been in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.
Hamas and Iran accused Israel of the 'assassination', while Israel had not commented or claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of publication. Haniyeh was a key figure in ongoing talks regarding a ceasefire in Gaza.
Fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza broke out after the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.
In Gaza, the Israeli army launched a large-scale campaign of air strikes and ground incursion, killing at least 39,480 and injuring more than 91,128 others, at the time of publication.
