The Patriarch of the Chaldean Church, Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako, stressed that Pope Francis is determined to make his first historic visit to Iraq, scheduled on Friday, speaking at a press conference held in Baghdad, on Wednesday, a few hours after a military base in western Iraq used by the US forces was targeted by a missile attack.
Patriarch Sako said that preparations to receive the Pope have been completed, pointing out that "all preventative measures against the spread of coronavirus, such as social distancing, wearing masks and sanitization, have been taken."
The Patriarch added that the Pope would like his visit to "send a message of solidarity for all the Iraqis, counting today at 40 million, about fraternity, coexistence, rejecting fanaticism, hatred and violence."
The Vatican announced that the Pope is making his first-ever visit to Iraq between 5-8 March. During his visit, the Pope will visit Baghdad, the ancient city of Ur, which is mentioned in the Bible, Najaf, Erbil, as well as Mosul and Qaraqosh in Nineveh Plains.
