Description

Thousands gathered in Berlin on Sunday to collect donations in support of the victims of the deadly earthquake in Syria and Turkey.

Footage shows protesters holding flags, dancing, and eating traditional food, while several demonstrators took the stage to speak to the audience.

"Tens of thousands of people died, many millions of people are homeless, and countless livelihoods were destroyed. While many of the consequences are not yet foreseeable, it has long been clear: the catastrophe is more than natural violence, it is deeply political,” affirmed one of the protesters on stage.

The event also commemorated the New Year and the Spring Festival Nouruz, a tradition celebrated among members of the Kurdish community.

On 6 February, two 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes rocked areas in Turkey and Syria. The combined total death toll from the disaster across both countries is over 50,000, while thousands of families were displaced after losing their homes.
