At least 26 people were found dead after a boat carrying more than 100 migrants capsized in Senegal's coast of Mbour on Sunday as search and rescue operations for the missing continued.

"This case is hurting everyone. Just seeing it gives you goosebumps. Seeing all those bodies come out of the sea hurts," one local said.

Footage captured on Wednesday shows rescuers sailing on a boat to search for more missing passengers as locals and loved ones watched and waited by the shore. Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye was also seen arriving at the search and rescue site and delivering a speech to residents.

Faye vowed that the Senegal government will implement policies to provide more jobs to younger people following the incident.

"If it were just a question of young people not having a job, you could say unemployment. But it's the desire to fulfil themselves, and we understand their confusion," he added. "But there are some who have work and still want to stop working to catch the waves. That's not an option."

He also called for the public's solidarity with the government, adding that a toll-free number will be set up to ensure "there can be no departures in conditions where people are taking to the sea unless there are people who know something about it."

The wooden boat, also called the pirogue, was reportedly carrying more than 100 migrants from the Senegalese town of Mbour on the way to the Spanish Canary Islands when it sank after 4 kilometres of navigation on Sunday, according to state broadcaster Radio Television Senegalaise (RTS).

Senegal's coasts are often used by African migrants heading to the Spanish Canary Islands, which serve as one of the main destinations for people trying to reach Europe.
