Description

Heavy rains and strong winds from Typhoon Yagi intensified flooding in Prayagraj on Tuesday, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes.

Footage captured on Wednesday features the scale of the disaster, showing submerged buildings, locals wading through waist-deep water, and boats stationed along flooded shorelines. Vehicles were seen navigating bridges over rivers that had swollen to dangerous levels.

Local Lalman Yadav described the challenges: "Due to floods, public life has been disrupted. We are facing a lot of problems. We have left our rooms and taken shelter at another place."

Another local, Gyanendra Pratap, added, "Goods are being brought by boat. The house is submerged, and we are unable to even get down from the top. We are getting down using the stairs from outside."

The Yamuna and Ganges rivers surged at a rate of nearly 10 centimetres per second, approaching critical flood levels. The Ganges was recorded at 83.9 metres in Phaphamau, just below the danger mark of 84.7 metres, while the Yamuna in Naini stood at 83.7 metres and continued to rise.

In response, authorities have set up seven relief camps to provide assistance to affected families.
