Description

Crowds of protesters were seen outside London's High Court on Monday ahead of a landmark decision which could mean either his extradition to the US or a chance to appeal.

During the last hearing in March, the court stated that the US needed to provide certain assurances, including that he would not face the death penalty and would have free speech protections. Assange has requested to attend the latest hearing in person.

Assange is wanted by US authorities on 18 charges, following the publication of thousands of military and diplomatic documents relating to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The extradition was approved in 2022 by then-home secretary Priti Patel. He remains in the UK’s Belmarsh Prison, where he has been held since being dragged from the Ecuadorian Embassy and arrested in April 2019.
