The Westland Flower Parade, also known as Varend Corso, a vibrant procession of small boats adorned with colourful flowers and themed after famous movies, made its way to the Dutch city of Delft on Sunday, captivating hundreds of thousands of locals with its unique display.
This year marked the 25th edition of the parade, which started on Friday at the Royal Flora Holland complex in Honsselersdyke, a hub for one of the world's largest flower auctions.
"We expect a lot of people with the nice weather today, so, I think it will be a nice celebration of this Jubilee," Sander Nieuwenhuizen, Varend Corso's spokesperson, said.
Local participants decorated the boats with flowers and vegetables sourced from the region, showcasing the creativity of floriculture companies, farmers, and residents alike.
A total of 47 boats graced the parade route, each intricately themed to evoke destinations such as Cordoba in Spain, and drawing inspiration from iconic movies like Alice in Wonderland, Minions, and Titanic.
Speaking about the floral extravaganza, Nieuwenhuizen shared, "I think there are boats on it with 10,000 flowers on just one boat, so, 47 boats, then you can imagine how many flowers and vegetables out of the greenhouses are on it."
Participating boats engaged in friendly competition across categories such as Corso boats, Bloom Battle, and Youth Parade, vying for accolades and recognition.
The parade meandered through several cities including Westland, Midden-Delfland, Maassluis, Delft, and Rijswijk, all nestled within the Het Westland region renowned for its bustling flower and agricultural trade centre.
