Description

Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was seen in archive footage, after it was reported he had been killed in a strike on Tehran on Wednesday.

Footage from Gaza in 2018 shows him meeting people and leading prayers. He is seen in 2021 with former Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi - who was killed in a helicopter crash in May this year - as well as with Hezbollah General Secretary Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut.

He is also shown meeting Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ankara in 2023. The footage includes the moment earlier this year that he was told in Doha that three of his sons had been killed in an Israeli airstrike.

Haniyeh was in Iran this week to attend the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian, when his residence reportedly came under attack. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed revenge for the killing and said Israel had 'prepared a harsh punishment for itself'.

Israel had not claimed responsibility for the attack or commented at the time of publication. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also denied that Washington had any prior knowledge.

The Hamas political leader was a key figure in ongoing talks regarding a ceasefire in Gaza.
