Description

The situation around US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's Asian tour, which has included a visit to Taiwan, 'is purely provocative,' Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov stated on Tuesday.

"Everything associated with this tour and a possible visit to Taiwan is purely provocative," he said, speaking before the Taiwan trip was confirmed. "As we can see, it provokes the situation in the region and leads to increased tension. Every country in the world is noticing this."

Peskov also claimed that Moscow was in 'absolute solidarity' with Beijing on the situation, stressing that the Chinese authorities' 'sensitive attitude' to Pelosi's visit to Taiwan was justified.

"Instead of respecting that sensitivity, unfortunately, the United States has chosen the path of confrontation. This does not bode well. One can only express regret here," the spokesperson noted.

Peskov also commented on US President Joe Biden's readiness to discuss with Russia the arms control system that will replace the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START 3) in 2026.

"Moscow has repeatedly spoken of the need to start such negotiations as soon as possible, as time is running out. If the treaty ceases to exist without being replaced by other framework, global security and stability, above all in the field of arms control, will be most adversely affected. That is why we have been advocating from the beginning that talks need to start as soon as possible," the spokesperson said.

The plane carrying US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Taipei at around 14:45 (GMT). Pelosi is expected to meet with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday.

Nancy Pelosi’s Asian trip included official visits to Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore but the media reported that the House Speaker was also planning to visit Taiwan on Tuesday.

In response, China's Permanent Representative to the UN, Zhang Jun, said the PRC would do everything possible to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In addition, at a briefing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said that the country would retaliate if Pelosi visited Taiwan.

According to media reports, amid news of Pelosi's trip, the aircraft carriers of the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA), Liaoning and Shandong, put to sea from the ports of Qingdao and Sanya.

In addition, the media reported also that the US had sent aircraft carriers stationed in the region closer to Taiwan.
