Rescue operations were ongoing in Masyaf, Hama on Monday morning after an alleged overnight Israeli strike hit the Syrian city, reportedly killing at least 18 people and leaving 37 others injured.

"This is a normal civilian area. The shelling killed and wounded dozens of innocents who knew nothing. Many were killed. They terrorised the entire area," one local said.

Footage shows emergency workers using excavators and conducting search and rescue operations at the site of the attack. Footage also shows the vehicles and buildings damaged in the strike. Meanwhile, injured locals can be seen being treated at the Masyaf National Hospital following the strike.

A firefighter being treated at the hospital, Mohammed Sumaya, said that the Hama Fire Brigade received reports of fires in al-Zawiya and Wadi al-Oyoun at around 2:00.

"The firefighters were deployed to al-Warraqa roundabout. We developed an action plan to find a way to pull out the people who were killed there. In the meantime, my fellow firefighters and I were targeted at the roundabout," Sumaya said.

Syrian state news agency SANA quoted a Syrian military source as saying that "the Israeli enemy launched an air aggression from the direction of northwest Lebanon targeting a number of military sites in the central region."

"Our air defence systems intercepted the aggression's missiles and shot down some of them," the statement added.

The news agency also noted that the attack caused substantial damage to the Masyaf-Wadi al-Ayoun highway, setting off a fire in the Hir Abbas area.

According to SANA, the attack disrupted the optical cable service along the Hama-Masyaf Road, resulting in a loss of communication services in the areas of Wadi al-Ayoun, al-Marha, and Sheha Masyaf.

Additionally, the strike reportedly caused damage to three vital water pumping stations and their associated pipelines, which supply water to the city of Masyaf.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry condemned the attack, stating: "the persistence of the Israeli occupation entity in its attacks on Syrian territory and other countries in the region and the continuation of its brutal war on the Palestinian people is evidence of its feverish endeavour to further escalate the situation in the region with unlimited US and Western support."

On August 23, Israeli fighters reportedly initiated strikes on Hama and Homs neighbourhoods, injuring seven civilians and inflicting damages.

The Israeli military typically does not comment on its airstrikes in Syria. However, in July, the IDF made an official announcement about bombing a target in response to rockets fired from Syria towards the Golan Heights, which is under Israeli control.
