Description

After a 'constructive and useful' phone call with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Sunday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced from Brussels that the two sides would 'go the extra mile' and continue to negotiate a trade agreement even after the Sunday deadline.

Von der Leyen said both she and Boris Johnson thought the decision was the 'responsible' thing to do 'at this point in time' to reach an agreement.

"We have accordingly mandated our negotiators to continue the talks and to see whether an agreement can even at this late stage be reached," Von der Leyen said.

Britain and the EU will continue the now year-long negotiations in Brussels.
