Description

Muslims gathered at the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram in Dhaka on Sunday to perform a congregational funeral prayer for the late Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed during an IDF military operation on Thursday.

Footage shows dozens of men gathering and performing the Islamic janazah (funeral) prayer before quietly listening to the sheikh's sermon.

Hamas has been designated a terrorist organisation by Israel, the United States and some of their closest allies.

Worshippers called on international leaders to drop their support for the Jewish state and to stop the 'Israeli aggression in Gaza'.

"Israel must be brought to justice under international law for the genocide in Gaza. The war situation created by Israel's occupation throughout the Middle East, including Gaza, must be stopped immediately," said one local, Nazmul Mahadi.

"Muslims must take all kinds of steps to stop Israel's genocide in Gaza. The United Nations must also take swift action to stop Israel's genocide. In addition, Israel should be brought to justice through the international court for carrying out genocide in Gaza," he continued.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Sinwar had been 'eliminated' on Thursday. He also emphasised that 'the war in Gaza is not over yet.'

The Israeli army also stated that Sinwar's assassination was the result of a joint operation by the army and Shin Bet, following a 'year-long manhunt' which culminated on October 16 during a military operation in southern Gaza.

Both Hamas and their military wing, Al-Qassam Brigades, confirmed the death of their leader on Friday.

Sinwar - who Israel claims was the mastermind behind the October 7 attacks - replaced Ismail Haniyeh following his assassination in Tehran less than three months ago.

The Israel-Hamas war has continued for over a year, starting with the militant group's unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

In the enclave, the IDF launched a large-scale campaign of airstrikes and ground incursions, killing over 42,600 and injuring at least 99,795 according to the Palestinian side.
