French President Emmanuel Macron addressed his relations with Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro, calling comments Bolsonaro made about his wife "very disrespectful," saying it was "sad for him [Bolsonaro] and for the Brazilian people," during a press conference at the G7 summit in the French city of Biarritz on Monday.

Macron first accused his Brazilian counterpart of not having been truthful with him about environmental commitments before moving on to personal matters.

"It never happens in France that a government minister insults a foreign leader on my behalf – while he had extraordinarily disrespectful language about my wife," he said. "What would you like me to say? It's sad. It's sad. But it's sad for him and for the Brazilian people, first and foremost."

He added that the Brazilian people and women in general were "without a doubt ashamed" of his behaviour, saying, "I have a lot of sympathy and respect for the Brazilian people, I hope they will soon have a president who is up to the job."

On Sunday, a Bolsonaro supporter posted photos of both presidents with their wives with the caption, "Now you understand why Macron is persecuting Bolsonaro?" to which the Brazilian leader replied "Do not humiliate the guy, ha ha," in reference to Macron.
