A convoy of US military vehicles was filmed on Monday driving along a road in the countryside of Syria's north-eastern city of al-Hasakah as part of the US plan to reinforce its positions around Syria's oil fields.
The US military made an announcement last week that it would strengthen its military presence in eastern Syria reportedly to protect oil fields from potentially falling into the hands of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL).
The decision has already been condemned by Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who US actions in Syria violate international law, calling their presence in the country "illegal". The announcement was made during a press conference following Astana format talks in Geneva on Tuesday.
Speaking alongside his Iranian and Turkish counterparts, Lavrov addressed the situation, stating that the "exploitation of a sovereign state's natural resources without its consent is illegal."
Both Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu reiterated the group’s commitment to recognising the territorial integrity of Syria.
