Dozens of protesters gathered outside the Ecuadorian embassy in London on Tuesday, demanding the release of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
Footage shows demonstrators outside the embassy holding signs such as 'Free Julian Assange' and 'RIP British Justice 1215-2021'.
"An American journalist in Russia was arrested on charges of espionage and the whole world is up in arms saying you cannot arrest a journalist for espionage. When we have been keeping somebody in jail for the last four years,” a protester said. “This cannot continue."
Assange is currently incarcerated in a British prison on charges of espionage after publishing thousands of leaked military and diplomatic documents exposing US war crimes.
The protesters gathered after 48 Australian politicians, including 13 from the governing party, appealed to US attorney general, Merrick Garland to end all attempts to extradite Assange from the UK.
Assange remains in the UK’s Belmarsh Prison, as his team continues to fight extradition. He faces 175 years in jail if convicted of espionage. Former British Home Secretary Priti Patel approved Assange's extradition in June, while Assange’s lawyers have appealed to the High Court.
