South African President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered a speech on Monday ahead of the beginning of the BRICS summit that will take place in Russia and affirmed that his country is ready to play its part in realising the economic potential of BRICS.
“The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is unlocking massive opportunities for trade, investment, and industrial growth. The African continent is looking for partnerships that will unlock the dynamism and the potential of its 1.3 billion people,“ he said.
"South Africa is ready to play its part in realising the economic potential of BRICS in the midst of an improved economic outlook for South Africa," he added.
The South African President said that the expansion of BRICS created further opportunities to foster ‘robust trade and development cooperation’, as now the group covers 43 percent of the world’s population and 27 global GDP, and declared that BRICS countries must create a collaborative environment to advance in the field of digital technology.
“We therefore call on fellow BRICS countries to partner with us to build the roads that are needed, the ports for exports and imports, the rail line, energy, and telecommunications networks that will enable Africa industrialise and to be able to trade with other countries in the world,” Ramaphosa added.
The 16th BRICS Summit is scheduled for October 22-24. World leaders from more than 20 countries are expected, with delegations expected from over 30 nations, for one of the major economic, political and cultural events of the decade.
Russia has chaired BRICS since January 1, 2024. The group also expanded this year, growing in both size and influence to nearly half the world’s population and a third of the global economy.
