Description

Protesters clashed with police in Santiago on Friday, as they gathered against the government over police Claudio Crespo's detention, accused to shoot in the eyes of protester Gustavo Gatica.

"I witnessed the shooting of Captain Claudio Crespo," protester Cristian Garcia said. "Many people were seriously injured and they were treated by emergency services. That person (Captain Claudio Crespo) is fine to be prosecuted and imprisoned, but now it is necessary to hold the political leaders responsible. What are the responsibilities of the director of police, Mr. Rozas, Mr. Pinera and the minister of the interior," he added.

The police deployed water cannons against the protesters at the emblematic 'Plaza de la Dignidad,' as several protesters were being detained.

A protester held the indigenous Mapuche flag as he sang for "the people who are in the street asking for dignity," demonstrating against the government over the indigenous 'mapuche' conflict and hunger strike.

Former Police Captain Crespo is reportedly being held in custody after firing projectiles during a mobilisation in November 2019, leaving protester Gustavo Gatica severely injured and blind from both eyes.
