٠٠:٠٤:٠١Belarusians can cope with the situation in the country on their own and the situation in the country is normalising, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced during a speech at the youth educational forum ‘Territory of Senses,’ in Solnechnogorsk on Sunday.
“Our approach is very simple – this is an internal matter for Belarus. Belarusians, as a wise nation, can cope with the current situation. The main thing is not to provoke disorder from outside. Now the situation is calming down but we know for sure that not everybody likes it," Lavrov said.
He also denounced Western calls for mediation towards further negotiations in Belarus “when the West says that only mediation with the participation of Western countries will be effective, of course, everyone has a fresh memory, as it was in Ukraine, where Western mediation turned out, as I have already said, to be a complete failure of our appropriate partners."
Lavrov condemned opposition attempts to interfere with the situation from abroad, warning of a repetition of the Ukrainian scenario.
“They want to change it to another way, in order to spill blood they try to provoke a reaction of the Belarusian security forces, who don’t harm anyone and don’t interfere in the peaceful demonstrations. In general, as I said in my opening speech, it’s a repetition of the Ukrainian scenario” Lavrov said.
The Foreign Minister went on saying that there are attempts to make the “normal, peaceful trend of the developments in Belarus violent after all, provoke bloodshed.”
The Russian diplomat also noted that the Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhonovskaya has been under pressure, mentioning that she started to make more statements in English.
“Svetlana Tikhanovski, who is in Lithuania where she went, declaring that she wants to do family business, and take care of the children. But, apparently, she was not allowed to settle down on this, and she began to make political statements, and quite tough ones, demanding continued strikes and protests,” added Lavrov.
Regarding the Russian role in Belarus, Lavrov said that Russia wanted to be useful in resolving the current conflict, adding that “Belarus is a fraternal country for us."
Mass protests erupted across Belarus soon after the announcement of President Alexander Lukashenko's re-election when the country's electoral commission announced that he had won 80.1 percent of the vote. Lukashenko has been in power for over 26 years.
