The spokesperson for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Al-Fattah Qurashi, claimed that its forces had 'completely taken control' of the key city of Singa in a statement on its X account on Saturday.
"Today, Saturday, the brave soldiers of the Rapid Support Forces have recorded a new victory in their continuous series of triumphs by liberating the Singa 17th Infantry Division," Qurashi said. "Our forces have completely taken control of the capital of Sennar State after inflicting a humiliating defeat on Burhan's militia, the Islamic Movement's terrorist battalions, and the so-called Popular Defense Forces (Popular Resistance)".
The Sudanese army denied RSF's statement but confirmed that fighting was continuing in Singa, the capital of Sennar state.
"Our forces have seized a substantial stockpile of military equipment, a significant move given the strategic location and military importance of the division," the RSF spokesperson stressed.
" The brave forces seized 112 vehicles fully equipped with military gear, including machine guns, the Operations Authority and the so-called Al-Bara bin Malik Battalion," he stated. "Additionally, they captured 6 armoured tanks, large quantities of weapons, ammunition, and artillery, as well as 250 motorcycles. The enemy suffered heavy casualties, numbering in the hundreds, and our forces took control of all institutions, including the State Government Headquarters".
Media reports said that the RSF launched an offensive in Sennar province earlier this week. They first attacked the village of Jebal Moya and then moved on to the provincial capital of Singa, where new fighting has broken out.
The RSF controls most of the capital, Khartoum, Gezira State in central Sudan, the vast West Darfur region, and a significant portion of Kordofan to the south. Sennar State, home to over a million displaced Sudanese, connects central Sudan to the southeastern regions controlled by the army.
Sudan has been experiencing severe turmoil since fighting broke out between the army and RSF in April 2023, resulting in the deaths of approximately 14,000 people, according to the United Nations.
The conflict has forced more than 8 million people to flee their homes, including 1.8 million who have left the country, making Sudan the country with the highest displacement rates globally, according to the International Organisation for Migration.
