Description

Dozens of displaced Palestinians held a mass iftar meal in a festive Ramadan spirit at a refugee camp located in Taha Hussein School in Rafah on Sunday, amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

Footage features adults and children arriving in the schoolyard, arranging improvised tables on the ground and having meals together.

People expressed hope to forget their hardships during Ramadan celebrations and wished for the war to end and return home 'in safety'.

"God willing, Lord of the worlds, that we will feel the joy of Ramadan. I feel that it is a religious atmosphere, the atmosphere that we used to spend in our homes with our loved ones, with our families," one of the refugees, Um Ahmed Abo Safiya, said.

The woman went to mention that she feels the atmosphere that people used to spend in their homes with their loved ones and families. "Now we are separated, and everybody is living in a different area. We are in a tragedy," she added.

According to Malak Saad Al-Din, a member of the Molham Volunteer team, which organised the event, its goal is 'to join hands, feel love and brotherhood, and live a day away from the atmosphere of war'.

The celebrations came on nearly five months since Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 32,782 people had been killed and more than 75,298 injured at the time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
