Description

Hundreds of athletes ran through Sao Paulo for the traditional San Silvestre Road Race, on December 31, with Ethiopia's Belay Bezabeh and Kenya's Sandrafelis Chebet winning the men's and women's categories in the 15-kilmetre (9 miles) race.

The race is the first to take place since the start of the pandemic, after the 2020 edition was cancelled.

"Finally, I feel happy. I'm back to life, the pandemic is taking a break and that's what we needed, to do sport. And God willing, we won't have this damn pandemic again," cheered one of the runners.

Despite implementing safety measures, the athletes did not need to wear a mask during much of the race, except at the start, the finish line, and some concentration points.

The event is organised by the Casper Libero Foundation, with the support of the Sao Paulo state government and the city council.
