Description

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Poland of international humanitarian law breaches on the Belarusian border during a press conference jointly held with the Chairman of the African Union Commission Musa Faki Mahamat in Moscow on Tuesday.

“There is absolutely unacceptable behaviour on the Polish side. I think that both the tear gas and water cannons and shots over the heads of migrants towards the state of Belarus - all this reflects, I think, the desire to hide their actions,” commented Lavrov.

“They cannot fail to understand that they are violating every conceivable rule of international humanitarian law and other agreements of the world community. Of course they understand all that. We are now witnessing that one of the tasks that the Polish side is solving is to prevent its actions from becoming public. Journalists are simply not allowed there,” added Lavrov

Lavrov also dismissed accusations of Russia's involvement in the migration crisis on Poland's border with Belarus as “false”, following allegations made on Monday by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda.

The Lithuanian leader had alleged migrants had been arriving into Belarus through Moscow.

In regards to providing assistance in the ongoing border crisis, Lavrov confirmed Russia was “ready” to do so but that it was crucial to “direct dialogue between the representatives of the European Union and the leadership of Belarus.”

As part of the conference, Lavrov also responded to US criticism of Russia's testing of an anti-satellite missile against an obsolete Russian satellite space target, which according to the US, has endangered the crew of the International Space Station due to space debris from the blast.

The Chairman of the African Union Commission, Musa Faki Mahamat, stressed the need for the “African continent be allowed to develop its own pharmaceutical industry in order to create its own medicines”, while Russia has offered to provide assistance to a number of African Union countries with their ongoing struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic.
